Global Women: Changing Our Own Stories! -- Sande Day

Several years ago my mom and dad were living in China and I was checking their mail. As mail goes, it was mostly bills and junk mail, but one day they received a post card from Global Women about International Women’s Day. It had been several years since we had an active Baptist Young Women’s group and I had been wondering how to get a similar group going again. When I saw the card I thought, “Maybe this is it!” Sure enough, it was. We had an International Women’s Day meeting, and over dessert, coffee, prayer and discussion about women’s issues in the world, the FBC Global Women’s Circle was born.
That was several years ago, and our group has continued to celebrate International Women’s Day. We have studied books together, watched movies, prayed, laughed, cried, learned--the list goes on. Global Women is an ecumenical missions movement with a vision of a world where every woman is empowered by the love of God, valued by her community, and equipped to fulfill her unique purpose. The mission is to transform our world through global friendships. It has been exciting to be a part of the work of the national organization, as well as to see how God has worked with us here at FBC.
Two great adventures have begun as outgrowths of our circle. The Circle of Hope is a group of women, some FBC members and some women who visit our church crisis closet, who meet each Monday. We have built lasting friendships as we have worked together learning to cook nutritious meals, make earrings, sew quilts, use computers, and write resumes. We take field trips together and sponsor the annual Christmas Toy Shop. Women who might never have met otherwise are now sisters! The desire to do something with the women of the other churches on High Street was the beginning of “Bless These Hands.” Women from our circle, along with women from the High Street Unitarian Church and St. Joseph’s Catholic Church have joined hands to have a fair trade festival for two years in a row. Mark your calendar now for this year’s festival on November 10. What fun it has been to get to know women from other churches, and to work together to benefit women around the world.
Our Global Women’s circle meets every fifth Sunday. On April 29, we will be watching the documentary Walk to Beautiful. Join us as we learn more about an issue that many women around the world face: fistulas. We will be bringing items for birthing kits that will help ensure safe births for moms and babies. Cindy Dawson, GW executive director says, “As we join together to pray, give, go and do, be aware that God will also be at work changing our own stories!”
