Good News from your Pastor Search Committee!
It has been a little more than a year since our pastor search committee first met. We had a big task ahead of us and wanted to make this search effort as efficient and thorough as possible, knowing that the future of our church would be shaped by our work. We sought out trusted Baptist leaders from across the USA who knew our church and would recommend candidates capable of it. This canvas yielded 55 moderate Baptist ministers for us to consider. None of these candidates approached us, and few knew they had been recommended until we asked for their résumé. These 55 candidates represented churches from eight states spread out from Georgia to New York in the east and to Kansas in the west.
Over a period of six months the committee members talked about the qualities most needed for our next senior pastor, reviewed résumés, listened to sermons, and talked with references of the 55 candidates. We logged numerous hours in meetings, listened to hundreds of sermons, and must have written at least a gazillion emails until we slowly narrowed our list of candidates down to nine, then six, then three, and then two. In the midst of a meeting a month ago we suddenly realized our decision was made and our work was done. With a unanimous voice we will recommend Scott Dickison to our church in a called church conference on Sunday, November 4, to be our next senior pastor.
Scott and Audrey Dickison grew up together in Providence Baptist Church in Charlotte, North Carolina, where they were married and where Scott was ordained. Their church’s pastor in those formative years was Chuck Bugg. Audrey is an artist who works from home for a studio based in Charlotte.
Scott comes to us by way of Wake Forest University and Harvard Divinity School and most recently as a pastoral resident in the 3,000-member Wilshire Baptist Church in Dallas, Texas. As early as February, we received strong recommendations of Scott from George Mason at Wilshire, CBF/GA coordinator Frank Broome, former Georgia Baptist minister and preaching professor Chuck Bugg, and others from North Carolina and Massachusetts. Some of their comments include:
- Strong preaching and pastoral skills
- Decisive, wise, even-tempered, respectful, mediator
- Collaborative, organized, adaptable, good listener
- Involved in creative ministries, relational leader
- Great sense of humor
- Strong marriage, delightful couple
- Nurtures lay leadership, makes everyone around him better
You are invited to meet Scott and Audrey this Sunday morning, November 4, at a breakfast between 9 to 10 a.m. in our fellowship hall. Scott will then preach in the morning worship service, after which we will have a called church conference when our search committee will recommend to the church that we call Scott Dickison as our senior pastor.
