Reflections on My Summer Children's Ministry Internship -- Mary Virginia Ireland
As the daughter of a minister, I’ve been surrounded by faith since the day I was born. Some of my favorite childhood memories involve playing hide-and-go-seek in the church and, of course, Vacation Bible School. By the time I was a freshman in high school, I slowly turned away from the church due to seeing some of the negative behind-the-scenes business aspects of church life. With our family’s recent move to a church in Dalton, Georgia, I have slowly regained my faith and felt the love that a church can provide for an individual. This internship has helped me remember how fulfilling a life of faith can be. Walking into these church doors, I immediately feel God’s power at work. I saw Him work in several incredible ways this summer.
The staff of this church is one that very few churches are lucky enough to have. I loved walking into staff meetings on Tuesdays, seeing the smiles, and hearing laughter. To be able to work with a group of people who are able to execute events and Sunday worship like a fine-tuned machine is an honor! Julie, you have been wonderful! I could not have asked for a better boss! I have learned so much from you not only about children’s ministry but also about how valuable family is, and the love for life that you have that just seems to radiate through your smile.
Along with an amazing staff, the families that make up the heart of this church are phenomenal. Whether it be in worship, at Wednesday night dinner, or just talking in the parking lot, it is so obvious that you all love and care for one another. I have been in close contact with several families here during my time, and I want to thank you for making me feel like one of your own children. I am truly blessed.
As for the children, Y’ALL ROCK! You all have made my internship here so enjoyable! Each one of you is full of life and has a heart that is on fire for Jesus. I hope that I have taught you something during my internship, but, at the same time, I know that you all have taught me so much. You have helped me realize that loving the Lord and following Him are much easier when you surround yourselves with those with the same beliefs. You have also taught me that the most simple of Bible verses and stories can have incredible meaning. As I prepare to move on to the next chapter of my life that God has planned for me, remember that I am always here for you. Anytime you need someone to talk to, I’m a phone call away! I love each and every one of you so very much!
The first weekend I went home this summer, I told my parents that I knew this internship would be a memory that I would never forget. I know that one day when I’m old and grey, I will remember the church that so lovingly brought me back to my feet and taught me the true meaning of Christian life and remember it with a smile of sincerity.
