A Month of Fresh Starts!
by Rev. Julie Long
While the dog days of summer just now seem to be beginning, the Sabbath of summer church activities is starting to wind down already! June and July have been slower, as we have traded the busyness of Wednesday night activities for a more reflective Wednesday lunch and program, as our adult Sunday School classes have met jointly, and as many individuals and families in the church have been in and out due to travels and time with family. With our school kids beginning a new year in the next two weeks, we are in for some new beginnings at First Baptist as well.
This Sunday, July 28, our children and youth will visit their new Sunday School classes for the coming year. On August 4, we will welcome our new first graders into full-time worship as they graduate from the preschool W.O.W. (Working on Worship) program. Grant them your encouragement and your patience as we continue to work on worship together!
August 11 is our “Fresh Start Sunday.” The whole church is invited to gather in the Fellowship Hall during the Sunday School hour for a time of fellowship as we celebrate a fresh start into our school-year activities and programs. We’ll have a conversation about the “state of the church” and will celebrate the good things God is doing in our midst. Our History team will introduce a new project in which all members are encouraged to write their personal stories of their experiences at First Baptist to preserve a narrative history of this grand church. And together, we’ll get excited about what is to come in the months ahead.
After our Fresh Start celebration in Sunday School, we will hold our Back to School Worship service. Our Back to School service has become a meaningful annual tradition in which we pray for and hear from our students, teachers, administrators and parents about their hopes for the coming school year. We will conclude the service with communion. Even if you don’t have someone in your family who is involved in school, join us! As a church that values serving God with our minds, we want to do our part to support and pray for those in educational systems in our community.
Regular Wednesday night programs for adults resume August 7, and our regular children and youth activities and our Wednesday language programs kick off on August 28. Throw in a new sermon series, a baby shower, and a baptism, and it really is a month for new beginnings! Join us at the Top of Poplar for your own “fresh start”!
