Being Church All Over Again
This week is big one in the life of our church. On Wednesday evening at 6:30 we will gather in the Fellowship Hall for our annual October Church Conference to discuss and vote upon many important committee reports that will set up our budget and church leadership for the coming year. Items to be discussed are as follows:
- Budget Committee Report. Hopefully everyone has received all the budget documents for the coming year, along with a pledge card. In addition to the usually accountant's ledger, we've also included in this mailing a "budget companion," which tells in narrative form the "story" of our budget. We hope this will be a useful tool in understanding how the church is choosing to use our resources.
- Nominating Committee Report. The Nominating Committee has been hard at work filling all our committee openings.
- Church Council Chair. The time has come for us to elect a new Chair of Church Council. Susan Broome has served in this role faithfully for the last several years (she, along with Bob Hardy, stayed in her leadership role for an extended period of time through the pastor search process), but is stepping down. Chuck Dumas has been nominated and approved by the Church Council and is now presented to the church for affirmation.
- Deacon Qualification Committee Report. The committee charged with vetting our deacon nominations will present their site of deacons to the church for approval. They have nominated 18 deacons, 8 of whom will be serving for the first time--the largest number in recent memory. The slate is as follows (* for for first time deacon):
Ginny Broome, Thad Broome, Joy Dumas*, Hunter Godsey*, Richard Green*, Becky Gunn*, Dennis Hagerman, Ruth Hunt*, Emily Kell*, Mary Leonard, Kathy Myers*, Terree Newberry, David Nicholson, Suzy Nicholson, Karen Summerlin, Eric Spears, Marina Spears*, Charlie Thomas
As you can see, there is much to be discussed--and celebrated!
In a very important sense, this is the time of year when the church commits itself to being the church for another year. We talk about our resources, we choose our leaders, and on next Sunday, November 1, we will seal all of this within the context of worship with our annual procession of commitment.
I hope you'll make plans to join us this week on both Wednesday and Sunday as we do this important work of being church together, all over again.
